What makes a good quality candle?

December 20, 2015 3 Comments

I was recently reading Reddit and came across this post on the sub-reddit "Candles": Capture2 There are several factors to consider when determining the quality of the candle:
  1. Type of wax. It depends on your personal preference, but the main choices are soy, paraffin, and beeswax (some people mix). (Our company uses soy because we are certified vegan and cruelty-free by PETA).
  2. Wick type matters because there are cotton wicks, lead/zinc wicks, and wood wicks - also preference, but I would recommend cotton or wood, as you don't really want to inhale the fumes of metal burning. You should also consider the diameter of the candle with the wick. If you have a candle with a diameter over 4 inches with one wick, it's possible the wick may not be powerful enough to create a full melt-pool. A quality candle will have a larger wick or multiple wicks dependent upon the diameter of the container.  Also note, in single-wick candles, is the wick centered?
  3. Quality of scent throw is important. Are you looking to scent a room, a floor, or just looking for ambiance? A good chandler will be honest with you about hot or cold scent throw (hot is while burning, while cold is in the jar/pillar).
  4. Type of fragrances used to scent the candle. Was the candle made with phthalate-free fragrance oils?  Are the fragrance oils of ultra quality?
  5. Does the candle have a warning label? Another sign of a quality candle is a label with clear burning instructions and warnings. These can be generic, but as long as there is a label.
  6. Container quality. While some candles may come in fun, fancy containers, it's important to note what the container is made of. Sometimes candles made with cheap, or low-quality glass, could explode.
No matter where you choose to buy candles, a quality candle company will have an explanation for why each choice is made, and be very honest and clear about ingredients.  It's always advised to ask questions!
